What You Will Need
Weather in the Alps can change quickly — from warm sun to wind, rain or even snow in a single afternoon — so the key is layering and packing smartly. You’ll want gear that’s lightweight, quick-drying, and versatile.
Packing Tips:
Layers are key. Weather can swing from hot to cold quickly.
Comfort over bulk. You’ll be happiest if your pack is light and essentials are easy to reach.
Quick-dry everything. Avoid cotton — it doesn’t dry fast and gets heavy.
Test your shoes and pack before the trip to avoid surprises on the trail.
-
Small hiking pack or running vest — as long as it can carry at least 1.5L of water and has a place to stow your rain jacket, snacks and extra clothes.
Water system — bladder or bottles totaling at least 1.5 liters.
Hiking poles — These are a must for both ascents and descents, telescopic poles recommended.
Trail running or hiking shoes with good sticky rubber soles. Boots are not required unless that’s what you’re most comfortable in.
Rain jacket — lightweight, waterproof, and breathable.
Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen — the alpine sun is strong even on cloudy days.
-
Pack for both warm and cool conditions — mornings and higher elevations can be cold, while afternoons in the valley may be warm. There is laundry at the house, so if you want to pack minimally, you will be able to wash things a few days in. This is what I consider the minimum requirement and assumes you will re-wear and/or wash clothes.
